History

Constantin Brâncuși accepted the commission in 1935 and completed the Endless Column in 1938 as a war memorial to the Romanian soldiers who defended Târgu Jiu against German forces in 1916 — reportedly refusing payment for the work. It's the anchor of a larger ensemble laid out along a 1.3-kilometer axis through the city, alongside his Table of Silence and Gate of the Kiss, forming one continuous sculptural route rather than three separate monuments. At 29.3 meters, the column is a stack of rhomboid modules that repeat toward the sky without an obvious end, meant to suggest an infinite ascent rather than any literal height. It's now considered one of the defining works of 20th-century modernist sculpture, and one of the few major Brâncuși pieces that never left Romania.
