Mănăstirea Hurezi

Part of Oltenia

UNESCO-listed Brâncovenesc monastery famed for its icon-painting and fresco school.

History

Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu founded Hurezi in 1690 as the largest monastic complex in Wallachia, and it became the defining example of the architectural style that now bears his name — Brâncovenesc, a distinctly Romanian blend of late-Renaissance and Ottoman-Byzantine influences prized for its stone carving and balanced proportions. The monastery ran its own school of fresco painting and manuscript illumination, training generations of icon painters whose work spread across the region's other churches. It was built during a period when Brâncoveanu, ruling under constant pressure from the Ottoman and Habsburg empires, deliberately used art and architecture to project Wallachian identity and prosperity. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage list in 1993, citing it as an outstanding and complete example of the style.
