Cetatea Oradea

History

A settlement and church already stood on this marshy site by the late 11th century under King Ladislaus I of Hungary, but the fortress took its current form in the 17th century, when Transylvanian prince Gabriel Bethlen commissioned Italian architect Giacomo Resti to rebuild it as a star-shaped, five-bastioned stronghold in the Vauban style — completed by his successors around 1650. That pentagonal layout, with a tower at each corner, is what still defines the fortress's outline today. A major restoration completed in 2015 turned the once-abandoned complex into a working cultural quarter, with the City of Oradea Museum, craft workshops, and medieval-themed events now filling the space inside its walls.
